His sweet eyes are more clouded than they were when I met him. Every year, they’ve worsened, he says. Every phone in our home is replaced by the kind with the huge push-button numbers. Every clock in the house chimes on the hour so he’ll always know what time it is. Even his watch talks.

When they first got injured and infected, his eyes went from blue to olive green. I’ve seen pictures of him taken right after he came home with heart failure, with his long brown hair and these big, soulful dark green eyes.

A few months ago, they were always bloodshot and painful, as red and green as a Christmas tree, beautifully demonic. He squints a lot, like he’s always got a headache, even though he says the headaches have become less frequent. Recently, whitish-yellow plaques began to spread over the corneas, nearly obliterating any remaining trace of his pupils and green irises. Now, his eyes glow like cat eyes when the lights are dimmed. He thinks his eyes are ugly and scary.

His doctor has told him, repeatedly, that the amoeba thing that got into his eyes killed any possibility of regaining his vision. Walter has never truly digested that verdict. He keeps hoping his eyes will improve, somehow…or that some doctor will come up with a revolutionary procedure. Meanwhile, I’m furious when his insurance continuously refuses to pay for any kind of cosmetic surgery that might remove or reduce that beautifully bizarre glaze.

He doesn’t believe me when I tell him that his eyes are beautiful, that they make him look like an angel and a devil. That they make me tremble sadly inside. His demure personality vanishes only in the evenings, when he shows me the reason he keeps shaving his chest…a collection of sexy costumes and underthings that he’s bought online at a negligee store especially for men…a black vinyl bustier with the tits cut out, saucy black lace panties, black garters with pale pink satin ribbons, a black bra that looks like a lacy tank top made perfectly for a man, black stockings with little butterflies, and a pair of sexy black strap stilletosstilettos that make his feet look gorgeous. On special nights while I’m on my way home from work, he spikes up his black hair with mousse, plumps up his lips with hot pink liplinerlip liner, and adorns his eyes with false lashes. He lives for putting pretty things on and teasing me. I beg him to let me take pictures of him, but his shyness abruptly returns the minute I produce my digital camera. He won’t let me photograph him, unless we dress up together. I’m very bad at color coordination as I put on my hot pink lipstick, fuchsia lace camisole, deep purple boxer shorts, sheer white stockings with skulls on them, and silver satin pumps that I can barely walk in. He moves effortlessly in his stilletosstilettos, twirling, posing, shaking his ass. All traces of his chronic ill health have vanished. He’s beautiful, gothic, mysterious…a male Lady Heather.
